SAFA has announced the names of the South African U20 Women’s National Team, to play Burundi over two legs of their first round of 2024 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers, in Johannesburg on Thursday, 5 October 2023

Both matches – home and away legs – will be played in South Africa, after Burundi requested to host their home match on Sunday 8 October 2023, at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, Pretoria.

Burundi’s stadiums are not CAF approved, and cannot host international matches.

The second leg of the qualifiers will be hosted by South Africa a few days later, on Wednesday, 11 October 2023, and will be played at the same venue. Both matches are scheduled for 3pm kick off.

Basetsana have been in camp for a week now and will be looking to progress to the next round of qualifiers, on their road to Colombia 2024. The FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup will be hosted from 31 August – 22 September 2024.

Head Coach Maud Khumalo is looking forward to the challenge, and has called up players most of who have international experience at U17 level.

Khumalo emphasised the importance of this team’s success:

“The U20 Women’s National team is under immense pressure, as this is our only national team that is yet to qualify for the FIFA World Cup but this is the year that we have to deliver.”

“We have drawn a lot of inspiration from what the Senior National Team has achieved in the last two years, and have emphasised to the players that they are the next Banyana Banyana generation and that the journey starts here at U20.”

“We have had a good week of training and have worked on areas that failed us in the past,” said Khumalo, “Therefore, we are confident that we will get good results against Burundi over the two legs.

‘’It is important that we take advantage of playing both matches at home because this is a blessing in disguise. We must take full advantage,” concluded Khumalo.
