AFRICA/BURUNDI – Death of President Nkurunziza: Bishops’ message of condolences

Bujumbura (Agenzia Fides) – “We express our sincere condolences for the death of President Pierre Nkurunziza, especially to his family and the government he led. We know that there is no one else who can comfort them, except the Lord”, wrote His Exc. Mgr. Joachim Ntahattereye, Bishop of Muyinga and President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Burundi, in the message of condolences for the death of outgoing President Pierre Nkurunziza (see Fides, 10/5/2020).
“We thank the deceased for the many positive works he did for Burundi as President of the Republic and we are committed to praying for him, so that God will give him the right reward for all the things he accomplished, guaranteeing him eternal happiness in his Kingdom”, writes Mgr. Ntahattereye on behalf of all Burundian Bishops, in the message sent to Agenzia Fides.
“We ask our Burundian brothers and sisters to join forces in order to continue honoring his memory by safeguarding the legacy he leaves us in order to give priority to God in everything and consolidate unity and peace”, urges the President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Burundi.
“May Almighty God grant him an eternal rest, full of peace and happiness, and may keep us at peace in this moment of suffering caused by his death, today and in the days to come”, concludes the message.
The Burundian Head of State passed away on June 8 at Cinquantenaire hospital in Karusi, officially due to a heart attack. On 20 August he was to hand over power to his successor, General Évariste Ndayishimiye, elected on 24 May (see Fides, 27/5/2020). (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 12/6/2020)
