Empowering Burkina Faso: China’s Investment in Renewable Energy
In a significant development for Burkina Faso’s energy sector, the Transitional Legislative Assembly has approved a €45.7 million conventional loan agreement with the Export-Import Bank of China. This financial support will pave the way for the construction of the Donsin solar power plant and an accompanying electricity storage system, marking a crucial moment in the country’s energy strategy.
China’s Investment in Burkina Faso’s Energy Sector
The recent endorsement of the loan agreement signifies a milestone in Burkina Faso’s international partnerships, particularly with China. With a loan totaling 30 billion CFA francs, equivalent to €45.7 million, the Export-Import Bank of China is demonstrating its commitment to supporting Burkina Faso’s energy goals. This collaboration underscores the growing relationship between the two nations in advancing renewable energy initiatives.
“The concessional loan pact between the Burkinabe government and the Export-Import Bank of China reflects a strategic investment in Burkina Faso’s energy infrastructure,”
The project, approved by the Council of Ministers in February 2024, under the leadership of President Ibrahim Traoré, involves the construction of a 25 MWp solar power plant at the Donsin airport site in central Burkina Faso. Additionally, a 5 MW/20 MWh battery storage system will be installed to ensure efficient electricity storage and distribution.
Enhancing Energy Reliability and Autonomy
Burkina Faso’s Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Quarries aims to improve energy reliability at Donsin airport while increasing the country’s overall power generation capacity. With the current capacity standing at 714.4 MW, including 220 MW of imported power, the new solar power plant will play a vital role in reducing reliance on external sources.
“The completion of the Donsin solar power plant is expected to strengthen Burkina Faso’s energy autonomy and reduce dependency on imported electricity,”
As a leading solar energy producer in West Africa, Burkina Faso already boasts an installed capacity of 92 MWp, surpassing neighboring countries in the region. The successful implementation of the Donsin solar power plant, scheduled to be completed within 15 months, will further solidify Burkina Faso’s position as a key player in renewable energy production within the sub-region.
The investment from China in Burkina Faso’s renewable energy sector represents a significant step towards achieving energy security and sustainability in the country. By expanding its solar power capacity and reducing dependency on imported electricity, Burkina Faso is poised to strengthen its energy autonomy and contribute to the overall development of the African continent.
“The partnership between Burkina Faso and China in the construction of the Donsin solar power plant not only enhances energy infrastructure but also sets a positive example for sustainable energy investments in Africa,”
