AFRICA/BURKINA FASO – A seminar to promote the role of girls organized by young Catholics
Ouagadougou (Agenzia Fides) – “It is time to promote the contribution of women in African society and in the Church of Jesus Christ in Africa”, emphasizes Msgr. Gabriel Sayaogo, Archbishop of Koupéla, President of the Commission for Youth of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Burkina Faso, as part of a study seminar focused on the protection of girls in a context of insecurity and humanitarian crisis, and in which more than 300 young girls and women from all over the country took part. The event took place from September 3 to 8 in Ouagadougou .
“Through the various activities of the seminary, self-confidence is promoted, said Archbishop Sayaogo, who emphasized: It is time to recognize the contribution of women in African society and in the Church in Africa and their fundamental role in education and transmission of culture and spirituality in communities and families”. Burkina Faso is under sanctions from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) following two military coups in 2022, while large parts of the country live in insecurity due to attacks by jihadist groups. The event’s patron, Legal Affairs and Litigation Director Ursule Taro-Sanon, recalled that it was neither easy nor safe to bring together more than 300 girls in the current situation. According to the president of the organizing committee, Dr. Julie Belemsagha, the aim of the conference is to “promote the participation of young people in nation building, regardless of gender, race, religion and ethnicity”. The seminar was also attended by young Muslim women representing the Association of Muslim Students in Burkina (AEEMB) who wanted a closer connection between their association and the National Council of Catholic Youth.
