Angola’s agricultural potential is considered to be the greatest in Southern Africa, thanks to considerable water resources, a favorable climate and a large amount of available arable land. Nevertheless, this potential is largely untapped, with only 5.9 million hectares cultivated in the 2020-2021 season out of the 35 million hectares of arable land. National agricultural production is lower than the demand and Angola imports more than half of its food needs.
AFD is financing structuring projects in the agricultural sector to help the Angolan authorities (Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Education) accelerate the diversification of the economy, create decent jobs in rural areas and promote the country’s food self-sufficiency in the framework of a partnership approach with the World Bank, the European Union, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the African Development Bank.
