ALGIERS- The maritime capabilities of African countries have come into the spotlight as they secure notable positions in the global ranking of naval powers. The Wisevoter site, known for its comprehensive analysis of military strength, has listed 144 nations based on their naval prowess. Impressively, four African nations have managed to carve out their place in this prestigious list. Egypt and Algeria lead the pack, securing positions in the top 25, followed by Nigeria and Morocco.
The African continent’s presence in the ranking highlights the region’s growing emphasis on bolstering maritime security and expanding naval capabilities. Egypt, ranked 13th worldwide, tops the charts among African nations with a fleet boasting nearly 250 military ships and 8 submarines. The country’ strategic location, coupled with its historical maritime significance, has been a driving force behind its substantial naval fleet.
Algeria follows closely behind Egypt in the rankings, standing as the second most powerful naval force in Africa. With over 200 ships and 6 submarines, Algeria’s fleet efficiently operates along its extensive 2,200 km coastline, ensuring the protection of its territorial waters and maritime interests.
Nigeria and Morocco also secured positions in the global ranking, standing at 163 and 121 warships, respectively. Both nations have invested significantly in their naval capabilities, striving to enhance their presence and influence in regional waters.
Cameroon, while standing at the bottom of the ranking with a fleet of 60 ships, should not be overlooked. The nation’s commitment to developing its naval forces showcases the growing importance of maritime security across the continent.
The top of the global naval power rankings is dominated by China, which boasts an impressive fleet of 730 warships. As the world’s largest Asian state, China has invested heavily in modernizing its naval capabilities, equipping its fleet with various technologically advanced ships and submarines, including aircraft carriers, destroyers, and frigates.
Russia closely follows China with 598 naval vessels and 49 submarines, solidifying its position as a formidable maritime force. North Korea, surprisingly, stands third with 519 units and 71 submarines, highlighting the country’s focus on expanding its naval strength despite its isolated position in global politics.
The United States, long known for its exceptional naval power, ranks fourth with a fleet comprising 484 warships. As a major global player, the U.S. continues to exert significant influence over maritime security and stability worldwide.
As African countries continue to invest in their naval capabilities, regional security and economic interests will undoubtedly benefit. The rise of Algeria and other African nations in the global naval rankings is indicative of the continent’s determination to play a more prominent role in maintaining peace and security on international waters.
The naval power rankings serve as a barometer of each country’s defense preparedness and strategic influence, reflecting the shifting geopolitical dynamics in various regions worldwide. With increasing challenges in safeguarding maritime trade routes and combating piracy, the importance of robust naval forces cannot be underestimated.
