In the last episode of the Geopolitical Report Podcast, our discussion with Yasmine Barka shed light on the current state of relations between Morocco and Algeria and which factors can further increase the regional geopolitical risk.
Yasmine Barka is a PhD candidate in international relations at Corvinus University of Budapest. Previously, she served in both the consular and research sections of the Embassy of Hungary in Morocco. She also worked at the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung office in Rabat, covering Morocco and Mauritania.
She holds a master’s degree in Diplomatic Studies from the University of Mohammed V in Rabat. Her research focuses on the nexus between climate change and migration in the Sahel and Maghreb regions. She also specialises in the geopolitical relations in North Africa, notably in interaction with its adjacent regions of the Euro Mediterranean and the Sahel. Yasmine is also interested in relations between Morocco and Central European countries. She is fluent in Arabic, French, and English.
Barka’s analysis delved into the historical roots of the strained relationship between the two North African nations, tracing back to their colonial past and post-independence trajectories. She explored how these historical legacies continue to influence the dynamics between Algeria and Morocco today.
One of the focal points of our conversation was the Western Sahara dispute, which has been a longstanding issue between the two countries. Barka provided insights into how this conflict has impacted their relationship, serving as a significant obstacle to normalisation. The dispute over Western Sahara has not only strained bilateral ties but has also influenced regional politics in North Africa.
Furthermore, Barka highlighted the recent intensification of disputes between Algeria and Morocco and the factors contributing to this escalation. These tensions have manifested in various forms, including diplomatic spats, military posturing, and regional competition. Understanding these factors is crucial for comprehending the complexities of the Algeria-Morocco relationship and its broader implications for regional stability.
Overall, Barka’s analysis provided valuable insights into the complexities of the relationship between Algeria and Morocco. By examining historical, political, and regional dynamics, we gained a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities for cooperation between these two neighbouring nations.
