TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian U-23 national team has arrived in Paris to face Guinea in a crucial playoff match for a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Indonesian Embassy in Paris posted their arrival on Instagram this morning, May 6.
Indonesian Ambassador to France, Mohamad Oemar, welcomed the Garuda Muda team, which is coached by Shin Tae-yong.
The playoff, scheduled to be held at Clairefontaine on Thursday, May 9, will be conducted behind closed doors in compliance with FIFA guidelines and for security reasons.
Indonesia has a final chance to seal a spot in the Summer Olympics after finishing fourth in the Qatar 2024 U-23 Asian Cup. Meanwhile, Guinea also finished fourth at the 2024 African U-23 Cup. The victorious team of the playoff match will join the host France, the United States, and New Zealand in Group A.
Erick Thohir, chairman of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), stressed the importance of the national team’s direct departure to France for their preparations. “We have to fight in the game against Guinea,” he said.
According to the April 2024 FIFA rankings, Guinea has secured the 76th position with 1,324.65 points, while Indonesia lags behind at the 134th position with 1102.7 points.
