AFRICA/NIGERIA – The 3 kidnapped nuns together with the seminarian and their driver have been released
Abuja (Agenzia Fides) – “With gratitude to our great God, the superior general, and the entire members of the Missionary Daughters of Mater Ecclesiae, joyfully announce the safe release of our three kidnapped nuns, a seminarian, and the driver,” said Sr. Gloria Nnabuchi, vicar general of the Missionary Daughters of Mater Ecclesiae, on the release of the three nuns kidnapped on October 5 together with a seminarian and their driver (see Fides, 9/10/2023) while on their way to Mbano to take part in the funeral of the mother of one of the nuns. Armed men took them away along with their driver.
The abductees were released on October 14, Sister Gloria specified.
The nuns, Srs. Rosemary Ejiowokeoghere Osiowhemu and Josephine Mary Chinyekwuo belong to the Missionary Daughters of Mater Ecclesiae, and Sr. Maria Ngozi Okoye belongs to the Risen Lord congregations. Meanwhile, the seminarian Peter Eyakeno Sunday belongs to the Missionary Sons of the Most Holy Trinity.
The scourge of kidnappings of priests and religious people in Nigeria has been known for some time (see Fides, 29/3/2023) and is part of a broader phenomenon of kidnappings which target, among others, foreigners, businessmen, politicians, government officials, diplomats and traditional rulers, but also ordinary citizens including students and schoolchildren, often victims of mass kidnappings, to the point that there is talk of a real “kidnapping industry” (see Fides, 25/5/2023). Kidnappings are committed by common criminals, by terrorist groups such as Boko Haram or by gangs of Fulani herdsmen (see Fides, 7/6/2023). But the distinction between the different types of kidnappers is not always so clear. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 19/10/2023)
