South Sudan’s Minister of Finance and Economic Planning announced on Monday that preparations are underway to release funds. Speaking in parliament, Minister Marial highlighted that his ministry is working diligently to provide the necessary budget to support the marking of secondary examination results. He assured that the funds would soon be allocated to the Ministry of Education.
The need for financial support was raised last month by the Minister of Education, Hon. Awut Deng, who urged the finance ministry to expedite the process for marking the secondary results. Observers have noted that financial constraints have delayed the announcement of the results, causing frustration among the parents of the approximately 45,000 students who sat for the South Sudan Secondary School Certificate exams in December 2023.
The Ministry of Finance in South Sudan has seen frequent changes in leadership due to ongoing economic challenges that have devalued the nation’s currency against the US dollar. These economic difficulties have prompted President Salva Kiir to reshuffle the ministry’s leadership multiple times in an effort to find a qualified candidate capable of implementing strategies to stabilise the economy.
As the youngest nation in Africa, South Sudan has faced significant economic crises, exacerbated by conflict that began in December 2013, just two years after gaining independence. Last week, President Kiir travelled to South Africa to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries, seeking support to address the ongoing economic issues.
