Chairman of the N i g e r i a – S o u t h Africa Chamber of Commerce, Osayaba Giwa-Osagie (SAN), has urged Nigeria and South Africa to explore new avenues for collaboration, encourage investment in key sectors, and work towards a balanced and fair-trade relationship that drives mutual prosperity.
Giwa-Osagie in his opening remark at the July Breakfast Meeting sponsored by South Africa Airways with the theme, ‘Diplomatic Relations Between South Africa and Nigeria-Prospects and Challenges,’ held in Lagos at the weekend said the economic ties between Nigeria and South Africa were deep and diverse, ranging from trade and investment to energy and infrastructure.
He, however, lamented that there was so much more potential to unlock. The socio-political dynamics between both countries, he said, had always played a critical role in shaping the diplomatic relations.
“We must address issues of mutual concern with openness and understanding,” he added. By engaging in continuous dialogue and promoting people-to-people connections, he noted that they could build a stronger foundation for bilateral ties with a view to any political tensions with diplomacy and a commitment to peace, ensuring that the relationship remains robust and resilient.
“It is important to note that both Nigeria and South Africa share a rich history of collaboration, resilience, and a deep rooted commitment to fostering strong bilateral relations.
As the two largest economies in Africa, Nigeria and South Africa hold a unique position on the continent, and our partnership is vital for the advancement of not only our respective countries but also for the broader African agenda.
“By fostering a business friendly environment and reducing trade barriers, we can create a thriving economic partnership that benefits both nations.
I recommend that we explore new avenues for collaboration, encourage investment in key sectors, and work towards a balanced and fair-trade relationship that drives mutual prosperity,” he added.
He listed education, technology, and innovation as the engines of future growth, stressing that by collaborating in these fields, Nigeria and South Africa could lead the continent in creating a knowledge-based economy.
“Let us think of ways we can enhance academic exchanges, support joint research initiatives, and foster technological innovation that addresses our unique challenges.
Also, by investing in our youth and leveraging technology, we can build a brighter future for our nations and Africa as a whole,” he said.
On his part, Consul-General of South Africa to Nigeria, Prof. Bobby Moroe, explained that both countries shared a common vision of political and economic integration in Africa.
