South Africa’s first coalition government since apartheid opens windows of opportunity for the country’s banks if core impediments to lending such as unreliable energy and lack of infrastructure can be fixed.
The African National Congress, which has held power since 1994, now needs partners to continue in government after the May 29 election deprived it of an overall majority. The coalition, which eventually emerged two weeks later, includes the centre-right Democratic Alliance, the Zulu nationalist Inkatha Freedom Party, and the smaller Patriotic Alliance.
