AFRICA/MAURITANIA – Bishops of West Africa: “We must create better living conditions for our young people”
Nouakchott (Agenzia Fides) – “In view of the resurgence of the phenomenon of illegal emigration in some of our countries, with numerous victims in recent weeks, we would like to express our solidarity and closeness for the pain of bereaved families. We pray for those who are missing and for their loved ones”, say the Bishops of the Bishops’ Conference of Senegal, Mauritania, Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau in the declaration issued at the end of their plenary assembly held in Nouakchott, in Mauritania, from 9 to 15 November.
The Bishops of the four West African countries reaffirm their concern about the situation and the future of young Africans. According to them, despite the efforts made to improve their social and economic condition, the situation remains very critical for a large number of young people. As a result, they urge the various governments to continue their efforts to provide them with satisfactory solutions.
In addition to the phenomenon of illegal immigration, the Bishops expressed their concern “about the issue of security in our countries and in our sub-region”. They note, “a gradual increase in violence based on ideologies that preach exclusion and intolerance based on religion, origin, culture, ethnicity or political affiliation”. To counter this dangerous phenomenon, the Bishops urge the populations to greater openness, tolerance, dialogue. The authorities should promote justice, equity, peace and social cohesion.
In view of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the bishops finally urge the people of their countries to exercise caution and perseverance in view of the health regulations that have been issued. In addition, they call on governments to do everything possible to protect the health and lives of the population. At the same time, they call on their respective Caritas to continue to help the most vulnerable population groups together with their partner organizations. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 20/11/2020)
